In Q4 2022, iRN LLC had the privilege of working with Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB) Kosovo on their project, "Cultural Heritage as a driver for Economic revival of Janjevë/Janjevo."
iRN LLC provided photogrammetry services for the project, using newly released DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise drone with RTK module, and RealityCapture photogrammetry software to produce accurate 3D models of buildings and accurate orthoprojection of building facades. Scope of work included 10 houses, and for each house following products have been delivered: Pointclouds (XYZ, LAS), 3D models (OBJ, FBX), Orthoprojections of all facades (TIFF, PNG).
Photogrammetry is the process of using photographs to create accurate 3D models of objects or environments. This technique has become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to advancements in drone technology and photogrammetry software.
One of the most significant benefits of using photogrammetry in cultural heritage preservation is the ability to create accurate digital representations of buildings and artifacts. These digital models can be used to study the structures in detail, without the need for physical access to the site. This is especially important for historical buildings that may be difficult to access or in a state of disrepair.
Another advantage of photogrammetry is that it allows for the creation of highly detailed orthoprojections of building facades. These orthoprojections are essentially 2D maps of the building's exterior, created by flattening out the 3D model. Orthoprojections are incredibly useful for architects and preservationists, as they provide an accurate representation of the building's facade that can be used for planning and restoration purposes. In the case of the Janjevë/Janjevo project, the 3D models produced by iRN LLC were used by architects to design restoration activities.
The project is an excellent example of how modern technologies, such as drones and photogrammetry software, can be used to support cultural heritage preservation efforts in Kosovo around the world.
